American Airlines and Hyatt announced today a unique new partnership that will let certain American Airlines customers earn additional Hyatt points on their air travel and vice versa — certain Hyatt customers can earn additional American Airlines points on their Hyatt hotel stays. The key word here is “additional,” because customers are not choosing between programs but instead getting points/miles from both programs when flying American or staying at Hyatt. The program was announced today, but will not go into effect until sometime later in 2019.

Specifically, World of Hyatt Discoverist, Explorist and Globalist members will be able to earn one World of Hyatt bonus point for every eligible dollar spent on qualifying American flights. Similarly, AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members will be able to earn one AAdvantage bonus mile for every eligible dollar spent at qualifying Hyatt properties.

Overall, this perk is easier to actually access from the Hyatt end, because reaching Hyatt Discoverist status can easily be achieved by getting the World of Hyatt credit card. Achieving American Airlines Gold status is a higher hill to climb, which means fewer American customers are going to get the chance for extra Hyatt points on their flights.

Other details of the partnership:

  • American’s invitation-only ConciergeKey members will receive World of Hyatt Globalist status.
  • AAdvantage Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members, and Explorist and Globalist World of Hyatt members will get limited-time status challenges after registering. Members will be able to use the loyalty benefits of the reciprocal program tier, giving AAdvantage elite members access to World of Hyatt elite status benefits like room upgrades, late check-out upon request, and free premium internet. World of Hyatt elite members will have access to AAdvantage elite status benefits such as priority boarding, free checked bags, free preferred seats, etc.
